Hey there Teacups! It’s time again for another Let’s Talk Tea post, this time around it features Cheeky Chai’s Indian Spiced Chai. When I first got into tea I wasn’t a huge fan of chai but in the many years that have passed it has slowly become a favourite of mine, especially since my Chai masterclass with T2 in 2017. Since then I’ve tried so many kinds of chai that it’s hard to list them all, so when I get the chance to try a new chai I’m always excited to see it if will blow any others I’ve tried out of the water. Having followed Cheeky Chai for a while and hearing all about the blends that they sell I knew I was in for a treat even before I opened this tea.
The dry leaves of this tea had such a delicious aroma as soon as I opened the packet I was instantly hit with heart warming cinnamon notes that quickly filled the room. Because cinnamon is so strong it somewhat muted the rest of this blends notes, but I did manage to pick out a honey sweet note that took me by surprise. Normally I have to add honey or agave to chai to balance it out but this one had such a naturally sweet aroma that I knew I wasn’t going to have to add any at all. The ginger root was a surprising addition for me I don’t think I’ve had a chai with it in yet so even though I couldn’t really pick it out in the aroma I was exciting to see how this new addition would surprise me when it came to be tasting it for the first time.
Tea Tasting Notes
I was so pleasantly surprised by this blend it was such a change from so many of the chai blends I’ve had before. The addition of the ginger root rounded everything off amazingly and helped to provide a delicious sweetness that meant I could have this blend straight and didn’t need to add anything too it. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a chai that I’ve been able to drink straight normally I must add honey just to calm the spiciness a little. I think another reason I loved this blend was because it had no cloves in it. There aren’t many things in the world I hate but cloves are one of them (peanut butter is the other) so without the harsh bite of cloves this chai was smooth and calming and it made me want it to be Christmas again so badly (probably because of the cinnamon).
It was a little bit astringent but the sweetness from the ginger root helped to make it almost un-noticeable. I often find that chai blends can be so heavy on spices that they completely overshadow the tea used for the blend but this one is perfectly balanced and malty notes were able to shine brightly and paired beautifully with the sweetness from the ginger root and the spice kick from the cinnamon. I didn’t really get much from the cardamom but then again I never can when it comes to chai.
Overall Teacup Rating : 4 1/2 /5
