Hey there Teacups! I’m back today with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Murchie’s 1894 Select Orange Pekoe. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now you’ll know that not too long ago now Murchie’s very kindly sent me a package that was jam packed with a selection of their most popular black teas and black tea based blends. I’ve loved pretty much everything i’ve tried from them so far (especially their Canadian breakfast blend) it’s not hard to tell that I’m a huge black tea fan (in fact you are probably all tired of me tell you how much I love it. So when it came time for me to try their 1894 Select Orange Pekoe I couldn’t have been more excited because it’s a mixture of assam and ceylon both of which I love and drink a lot of so I knew I was going to enjoy this before I had even opened it let alone smelt or tasted it.Here’s what Murchie’s themselves have to say about this blend on their website: ‘’ Originally blended in the 1890’s – 1894 Select Orange Pekoe is one of Murchie’s original blends, named after the year of our founding. A union of bright Ceylon and rich Assam teas, this strong, traditional blend is designed to celebrate and elevate the everyday ‘cuppa’ tea. Murchie’s 1894 Select Orange Pekoe Tea is a true cuppa for the tea drinker looking for an Orange Pekoe tea. This tea is a traditional part of early Murchie’s blending history as one of our original blends, and as part of the history of British Columbia. The Port of New Westminster and Murchie’s Tea & Coffee have a combined history, dating back to 1894, when John Murchie started blending teas in the burgeoning city. The port’s early days are depicted in an artist’s rendering on the packaging of this fine, flavourful tea to illustrate this part of our history.
Ingredients: Bright Ceylon and Rich Assam TeasIf you love black tea you will know what I mean when I say that this smells like a typical Orange Pekoe blend it’s a bit samey and if I’m honest and when it saw how close this is to being a CTC grade tea I definitely had to adjust my expectations a little bit. Aroma wise this blend is heavy on the malt notes but also has notes of honey, vanilla, milk chocolate and walnuts. Coming from the UK the moment I smelt this blend I was instantly reminded of Yorkshire Tea and Tetley Tea it smells a little bit like both of them but it’s of a better quality of course. The aroma of this blend is what I have come to expect from black tea (well orange pekoe anyway) and honestly it made me feel a little bit nostalgic and reminded me of when I first go into tea and the tea I used to drink every now and then as a child.
Brewing Guide: 1 tsp to 6-8oz or 5g to 177-237ml of water | Murchie’s Say 3-5 minutes but I wouldn’t go longer than three at all. Because this is a CTC is has a smaller surface area and as a result doesn’t need as long to steep and I think 5 minutes would be to long and result in it being overly bitter.
Tea Tasting Notes
This blend is a true classic and I love it because of that, I spend a lot of time trying blends with added elements and I often forget about how good straight black teas/black tea blends are and this blend has helped me remember just how good they are. When I told you at the start of this post that I knew even before I had opened this that I was going to love this blend and I was right! I think one of the reason I loved it so much was because when I saw that the leaves were CTC I lowered my expectations but when I took my first sip I honestly wasn’t expecting it to taste as good as it does and it blew the expectations I had for it out of the water. Murchie’s black tea blends all seem to have the same quality of tea leaves used in them and normally I would shy away from blends that used CTC but Murchie’s have taught me to look past that and let the blends speak for themselves.It’s a Fairly full bodied and robust blend filled with malty notes from top to body to undertones. In a way it’s very close to being a little bit ‘one note’ like a lot of orange pekoe/breakfast blends but after you take a few sips an it cools a little bit you start to notice that isn’t not quite one note and does have a slight nuttiness to it and a molasses-y sweetness to the undertones. I did try my mouth out just a little bit towards the end of the cup but that’s only to be expected with a heavy full bodied blend like this. It’s a little bit astringent but in a good way if that makes sense and it can be easily balanced out with a tiny bit of honey which adds a whole new depth to the tea and seems to bring out a much stronger nutty note. I myself would have this without milk but I can imagine it would take milk very well. I can definitely see this becoming a everyday tea for me it’s the perfect blend to start a morning with. I can see this being a great tea for those who are new to loose leaf and want something that’s very close to what they would be used to from tea bags but a little bit better.
