Hey there Teacups! I’m back today with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Debonair Tea Co’s – Persian Chai blend. You all know just how much I love chai so when I saw that Debonair Tea had included this blend in the package they very kindly sent me I couldn’t have been happier. As much as I love a classic chai and a masala chai, after a while they can get a little bit one note so I’m always on the look out for unique chai blends and this one is definelty very unique. Of course, it has all the classic chai ingredients like Black Tea, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Fennel, Ginger but it also included Lavender & Rose which is something I have never seen before and such a unique twist on a classic. Here’s what Debonair Tea have to say about this blend over on their website: “A naturally sweet and fragrant Persian-inspired Chai blend combining Chinese Rose Congou black tea, sweet spices and lavender”.
Ingredients: Chinese Rose Congou Black Tea (54%), Spices (39%) (Ginger, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Fennel), Rose Petals, Lavender. | May contain traces of cereals, almonds, hazelnuts, milk, soya, mustard and sulphur dioxide. | Steep 1tsp per cup for 3-5 minutes in 95-100°C water. Enjoy with or without milk and sugar.
Tea Tasting Notes
Like I said previously I adore classic chai blends but they can get a little bit boring after a while so I’m always on the look out for unique twists on them, hence why I was so excited to see this blend had been induced in the package I was sent by Debonair Tea Co. I’ll be honest though, as well as being excited to try it I was a little bit nervous that both the Rose and Lavender were going to be far too strong and they would over the classic chai ingredients and the black tea base itself. Most blends I have had with either Lavender or Rose have been far too floral for me and very one note because they are both heavy hitters and can easily overshadow a lot of things if too much has been used in a blend. Fortunately that wasn’t the case with the blend and it’s actually pretty well balanced resulting in a delightful cup of tea to drink.
The Rose and the Lavender were actually much more subtle than I thought they would be; now don’t get me wrong they were present but much more in the background than I assumed they would be. The Rose provided both a delicious sweetness and a floral note that added a whole different level to a classic chai. The Lavender is much more subtle than the Rose which is a given and it mostly comes through in the aftertaste and adds a somewhat cooling note to the end of each mouthful. This blend really is unlike any other chai blend I have ever had and I’m so thankful I was given the chance to try it. I think the decision to use Chinese Rose Congou Black Tea was a genius move on behalf of the team at Debonair Tea because it really helps to reinforce the rose element of this blend and stops the stronger spices from drowning it out.
In terms of preparation suggestions I have two: firstly try this blend on it’s own so you can truly see just how amazingly unique it is and taste each and every one of the ingredients included in the blend. On it’s own the floral notes are much stronger but still not overpowering or drying in the mouth at all but I would recommend adding a little honey if you aren’t a fan of strongest floral notes. After trying this blend on it’s own if you are partial to a tea latte like I am I highly recommend you use this blend to make one. It makes an absolutely delicious latte and the Rose and the Lavender are still able to come through despite the addition of milk.
The Rose element also seem to be much sweeter when I added milk, I’m not sure why but I’m certainly not complaining. Adding in milk and I tiny bit of honey really does balance this blend out perfectly and while it is nice on it’s own I think in the future when I repurchase this blend I will only use it to make lattes (both hot and iced). I even think this would make a great base for a bubble tea so I will have to try that out at some point. This will be a blend I will continue to buy for as long as Debonair Tea stock it because it truly is one of a kind.
Overall Teacup Rating: 5/5
