Hey there Teacups! I’m back today with another Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Plum Deluxe – Oregon Breakfast blend. This is the last of the three blends that they very kindly gifted me so this will probably be the last time you see them feature on my blog for a while until my tea buying ban is over and I can make an order. Once I’ve sipped down enough to end my tea buying ban you will definitely see a lot more of Plum Deluxe on my blog because I’ll want to sample a lot of their blends.
When I was given the chance to go through the Plum Deluxe website and choose three blends to try I had to give their Oregon Breakfast blend a try because it just sounded so unique to me. I can’t say that I’ve ever had a breakfast blend with both honeybush and black tea and the fact it also has orange and hazelnut in it just makes it even better so I just couldn’t pass it up.Here’s what Plum Deluxe have to say about this blend over on their website: ”This hazelnut tea with orange is how Plum Deluxe folk like to start their day. The earthy base of black tea and honeybush tea helps centre you; the ping of orange helps wake you and get you excited about today’s possibilities. It’s a simple tea and yet it is rich with subtle flavours. Hazelnut — in its oil essence form — has tons of great anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant benefits, as well as vitamin E. Paired with some orange, you’re getting a true boost from this tea in every cup. The nuttiness also mimics the nuttiness of coffee — perfect if you’re trying to quit that morning cup of joe!”

Tea Tasting Notes
I’m sure you all know well by now that black tea is one of my favourites and I like to start each and every day with a strong black tea to give me that kick-start I always need. With this being a breakfast blend I knew I had to make it my first tasting session of the day and see if this black tea / honeybush based blend would stand up to my usual breakfast blend choices and give me the morning boost that I look for. For this tasting session I chose to try this blend two ways, I tried it on its own to get a true feeling of what the blend had to offer and then I tried it with honey and a dash of milk as that’s how I normally have my breakfast blends in the morning.
The black tea is quite strong and I was expecting it to overpower the honeybush element but instead they paired perfectly together and neither cancelled out the other; the black tea providing strong malty notes and a woody undertone and the honeybush providing a honey like sweetness and a underlying chestnut note all marrying perfectly together. The hazelnut note was quite strong in the aroma and I was expecting it to mellow a little bit in the taste but it stood its ground and stayed quite strong which surprised me quite a bit. Sadly thought that cancelled out the orange which I was quite sad about as it would have really rounded this blend off well.It did come through ever so slightly in the aftertaste but all in all I really would have preferred a much stronger orange note. Now at the start of my tasting notes I said I tried this blend prepared two ways and there were big differences between the two so I don’t quite know if I can pick a favourite. The cup of this tea I had that of the blend on its own was flavourful and robust. Adding no additional things to it enabled the more subtle undertones to come through and the orange was noticeable in the aftertaste. The cup of tea I had in which I had put milk and honey was much different but just as delicious as the first cup.
The addition of milk and honey made this much more of a dessert blend which I’m totally not complaining about because I love dessert blends. The milk seemed to soft the strong hazelnut notes and make this such an indulgent tea to drink, though it did stop the very subtle orange note from coming through at all which was disappointing but to be expected because it was very subtle and almost non existent in the first place. Never the less I think I’ll prepare what I have left of this with milk and honey because it’s so deliciously indulgent and will be a great way to start autumn and winter mornings.
Overall Teacup Rating: 4.9/5 | Had the orange have been stronger and the hazelnut been a little softer this would have gotten a 5/5 from me.
