Let’s Talk Tea | 3 Leaf Tea – Birthday Cake Matcha | Review

Hey there Teacups… Happy Matcha Monday! I’m back today with another matcha review for my Let’s Talk Tea series and this time around I’m going to be reviewing 3 Leaf Tea’s – Birthday Cake Matcha, a sample of which was sent to me by a very kind tea friend and ever since it arrived I’ve been eager to review it for you all. I’ve not been ask by 3 Leaf Tea or the tea friend that sent me this to review it I simply wanted to review it for Matcha Monday and hopefully introduce you all to a new tea company at the same time. Because after trying this matcha I for one know I will be ordering from this company in the future (if they ship to the UK) because all of their matchas sound amazing.RoundPhoto_Feb032020_150356Here’s what 3 Leaf Tea have to say about this matcha over on their website: ”Want to have your cake and drink it too? Tea Tasting Notes

Now you all know me well enough by now to know that dessert inspired teas are my absolute favourite but I can’t say I’ve ever had a dessert inspired Matcha so I was really looking forward to trying this one and I was hoping that ”birthday cake” aspect of this blend would come through prominently but once I started to prepare it but sadly that wasn’t the case.  Most of the dessert like aroma went away when I added the water and taste wise there was only a subtle hint of birthday cake which to me tastes mostly like vanilla buttercream. I’m not complaining at all I just wish that it had have been a little bit stronger. It’s also quite buttery which I wasn’t expecting but it definitely does contribute to the birthday cake flavour.

The matcha used for this blend is clearly of a great quality, it’s vegetal / grassy, buttery, smooth and definitely stands its ground against that flavours. I suppose the one upside the flavour being quite subtle is that the matcha gets to shine in its own right and the two actually pair beautifully together. Though I know that the matcha used for this would have still been able to come through even if the birthday cake flavour was stronger.

I’ve now tried this matcha both on it’s own and as a latte and I think my favourite way to have this so far is as a latte. That’s not to say that it isn’t delicious on it’s own and it’s naturally sweet enough that you don’t need to add any kind of sweetener, I just prefer it as a latte. It adds to the overall dessert aspect and definitely makes both the vanilla and butter notes much stronger. It does mask some of the matchas notes but it doesn’t completely drown it out which is nice. I’m yet to try this as an iced latte as it’s still really cold here but as soon as it starts getting warmer I’m definitely going to give it a go. This is definitely a flavoured matcha I would love to constantly have in my collection so I hope I can find a way to order some more along with some of their other flavoured matchas because they all sound amazing.

Overall Teacup Rating: 4.9/5

  1. I love 3 leaf tea. They make some great flavored matcha. I’ve only tried their birthday cake and coconut matcha but I want to try some of their other flavors soon. The coconut matcha was so good.
