Hey there Teacups! I hope your weekend is off to a great start. I’m back today with a Let’s Talk Tea post and this time around I’m going to be reviewing Tea 23’s – Rooibos. While I have really enjoyed the previous teas and tisanes I’ve tried from Tea 23 I won’t lie I was a little nervous for this tasting session as I’m never normally a huge fan of rooibos when it doesn’t have any other additional flavours added to it. As you all know though I’ve been looking to push myself of tea and tisane comfort zones so I jumped straight into this tasting session and made sure I tried it a few ways to see if I could prove my taste buds wrong.
Here’s what Tea 23 themselves have to say about this tisane over on their website: “A sweet, nutty, and naturally caffeine-free herbal infusion”
Ingredients :Rooibos (98%), Sunflower Petals
Tisane Tasting Notes
For this tasting session I tried this tisane in three ways: on its own (hot), with just honey added (hot) and then finally with both honey and milk added (hot). Out of them all I would definitely say the cup with both milk and honey added was my favourite. That’s not to say that the cup on its own and the cup with just honey added weren’t nice, because they were, but as I mentioned earlier in this post I’m not a huge fan of rooibos when it’s own it’s own with no other addition flavour; no matter the quality of the rooibos I’ve never been able to get myself to enjoy it on its own.
This particular rooibos is definitely good quality and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the blend overall as I was able to find the perfect way to prepare it for me and I’ve been enjoying it non stop since. There’s some natural nuttiness, sweetness and a very subtle vanilla to it and once I added in some honey they all seems to amplify and which was fantastic. A boost to that natural sweetness is what I personally needed to make my taste buds enjoy those natural rooibos notes but that really is a matter of personal taste on my behalf. What I will note is that both with and without honey this is an incredibly smooth cup and was a pleasure to drink in that sense especially later in the day when I’m trying to wind down and relax before bed.
This was a really hearty cup and even though I only steeped it for around 4 minutes it was quite strong so it stood up to the addition of milk perfect and didn’t waver in its strength at all. The addition of the milk added a creamy note to the overall flavour profile which made this just feel a little bit more indulgent. Like I said even on its own this is incredibly smooth so once that milk was added in the overall mouth feel became silky smooth. The natural nuttiness, sweetness and subtle vanilla note were all able to come though as well so the addition of the milk didn’t outshine any other aspects of the rooibos and still allowed it to shine though.
It makes an absolutely unbelievable latte though which I’ve been enjoying a lot recently as its a perfect drink just before bedtime that I have found honestly helps me to fall asleep easier. I would definitely recommend that if you are going to try this, even if you enjoy this on its own, that you try this as a latte with frothed milk and honey just once. I promise you that you will not regret it. Then you can come back to this post and thank me for you new found rooibos latte addiction when you’re done! While my personal tastes stopped me from being able to enjoy this on its own, once I was able to find a way to prepare it that was perfect for me I actually really did enjoy it and I would even go as far to say that it’s one of the best non flavoured / non scented rooibos’ I’ve had in a long time. This will be one I would definitely repurchase specifically to make delicious bed time lattes with.
Overall Teacup Rating: 5/5
