Hey there Teacups! It’s time again for another Tea Together Tuesday post. I’m so glad Jann and I decided to bring this series back this year and that everyone has enjoyed the prompts so far in January, I can’t wait for what’s to come for the rest of the year. This week’s prompt is: What is your favourite Tea Subscription Service? Will you be signing up to any new ones this year?
As soon as I knew we were doing this prompt, I knew exactly what my answer was going to be, because there has been one tea subscription service I’ve been loving for the last few months, if not years, and that is the Tomotcha Subscription Service. Though I’ve not been subscribed consistently throughout the last few years, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with them a few times for my Let’s Talk Tea series and each and every tea I have tried from their fantastically put together subscription service has been incredible.
The last tea I received from this subscription service was a a Karigane (雁ヶ音) from the region of Uji (宇治), and neighbour regions, in the prefecture of Kyōto (京都). It is literally a tea made of stems, stalks, and twigs, traditionally called Kukicha (茎茶) in Japanese, which literally means “twig tea”. In the region of Kyoto they are traditionally called Karigane (雁ヶ音), however recently the name Karigane is being used in more and more regions, because the sound of Karigane is pleasing to the ear, and the word Karigane (雁ヶ音) is poetic visually. For my Sakura teacup from Yunomi, which holds 100ml, I used 2 teaspoons of leaves and 100ml of freshly filtered water at 80ºC. My first steep lasted for a minute and resulted in a fantastic cup with a fresh green aroma. The flavour is uniquely sweet and delicate but there were some umami elements, the added stems add a tartness and there are also brothy and nutty notes in the flavour profile as well. All in all this was absolutely delicious, which was only to be expected and really did just keep up the track record of fantastic teas from Tomotcha.
When I first featured Tomotcha on my blog, I was very new to the world of Japanese tea and ever since then they have help me learn so much about Japanese teas I probably wouldn’t have tried had it not been for their subscription. This service is great because each month the team select a delicious and authentic Japanese tea, and they are doing their best to highlight the best that Japan has to offer in terms of tea and showcase just how varied the teas that japan produces are. I feel like Japan is incredibly overlooked when in comes to tea and I really do think that this subscription is one of the best ways to get into exploring it and at only $20/£14.50 a month right now (at the current exchange rate), I think it’s brilliantly priced as well. Once I have sipped my way though the crazy amount of tea I currently have I will definitely be subscribing to this tea subscription for the long haul.
